Rules Of Poker What Beats What

I have a couple questions regarding poker rules and etiquette. Does 5 of a kind beat royal flush? I have a couple questions regarding poker rules and etiquette.
Q1) Does 5 of a kind beat royal flush? I'm pretty sure that it does, but I was playing in a game the other night and the others there said that it beats a lower straight flush but not a royal flush. Luckily my 5 9's were only up against a lower straight flush.
Q2) I was playing a high low game where the rules stated that you needed a flush or better to win high. Someone went high ahead of me, and I had a hand that was good enough to go high or low, but not high and low. I had an 8 high flush, so I figured that the guy going high probably had me beat. I went low, and the guy says "Woops, I only have a straight." So the guy who won low took the whole pot. I would have won high if I had gone that way, and I would have gone that way if this guy wouldn't have gone high in error. Should I have had any recourse? Should the guy have been penalized somehow? What do you do in your games?

stephen g replied: "in strait poker a royal strait flush . bets 4 A's 5 would be with a joker. Jokers good only with A's,straits and flushes."

bigslick316 replied: "In truth, "royal flush" is nothing more than a nickname for a particular hand, that of course being a "straight flush to the ace," so five of a kind should beat it. If the rules of your game state otherwise, however, so be it."

JudasHero replied: "Q1. although I think poker games where you can get 5 of a kind are ridiculous, I actually read the technical rules on that one, and no, a royal flush is still the best hand. I believe it beats a straight flush though.

Q2. Again, another rule variation which I think is utterly ridiculous, but a friend of mine abides by. I think your best recourse is to play hi-lo properly, where you simply show your hand and the best hi and best lo win. I don't play those silly "flush or better" or "call the hi/lo" games, that's what I do."

dennis s replied: "answer to # 1 a royal flush is the BEST hand in poker period!!!!! with or without wild cards.#2you have no recourse for someone elses stupidity!!! you play your hand and you ONLY are resposible for your decisions.AT my house we play house rules and discuss such an occurance beforehand and set the rules/penalties etc. ahead of time so there is no missunderstanding before play begins."

SecundzNotis replied: "5 of a kind, with wild cards of course, beats a royal. That is the door that you open when playing with jokers or wild cards. Straight poker has no 5 of a kind.

Your secund question sounds like a 'luck of the draw' misfortune. You win some and you lose more."

William H replied: "5 of a kind is not possible in a regular poker game. The rankings of poker hands depends on how likely the hand is to come into play. Since is more likely to get a royal flush than 5 of a kind, 5 of a kind is a higher ranker hand.

The person who declared high and did not win was penalized in that he did not win the hand."

Vegas Matt replied: "There is no official rule for 5 of a kind vs royal since regular games do not include wild cards. Since you made the game, you decide.

At video poker machines with wild cards a 'natural' royal (a royal with no wild cards) pays out higher than 5 of a kind+ut a 5 of a kind pays out better than a royal with a wild card (i.e. A,K,Q,J, Joker). If I were you, that's how I'd do it."

what are the rules about talking at the poker table? When playing seven card stud are you allowed to help other players with there hands verbally?By telling them which cards they could still get to beat there apponent.

lins0043 replied: "Just keep your mouth shut. You don't want to piss off other players and stuff. If you are involved at the table, it is best to just stay out of it. Things could get ugly!"

Steve V replied: "of course not! Rule is one player per hand."

Ruby replied: "No, you shouldn't talk about any hand until it is over. If you are in the game you cannot help each other out. It is called cheating and working together. If someone is playing, they have to depend on their own skills and knowledge. You wouldn't want other players to help out someone else."

sincity usa replied: "No you can not do so, one of the rules of poker is one player to a hand. The dealer nor anyone at the table is allowed to help you with your hand. In low limit, the dealer will call out possible straights and flushes, but they can't help with the play of the hand nor can any other players."

banana replied: "this is a no-brainer. each player has to play their own hand, and let the others play theirs. how would you feel if the others coached someone into beating you. its best to set limits on "help" if its a friendly game and keep quiet at a cardroom or casino. part of learning the game is making your own decisions and living with the results. Good luck!"

pokercoach replied: "NO!!, giving lessons or advice at the table is forbidden and is grounds for immediate expulsion from the game!,the rule is "one player per hand" don't give an active player advice during the play of a hand, you'll either anger that player or other at the table.

Take care"

Darryl R replied: "The skills that a player uses in stud include his remembering what other cards have been dealt face up, his ability to figure out each player's potential and his ability to guess at others' hidden cards based on their betting and behavior. If a player or bystander helps a player, their combined observations and memories are greater than that available to others and make the game unfair.
For the same reason, a player should never reveal or talk about his hole cards while he is playing or after he has folded.
The greatest dishonesty in poker involves two or more players who through words, expressions or secret signs help each other to win."

Question about hold 'em poker rules : why did three 2's beat three aces? I was watching the World Series of Poker last night, and a player had pocket 2's, and one came up on the flop, giving him three of a kind. Another player had one pocket ace, one came up on the flop, and one on the turn, supposedly giving him three of a kind (aces). But the player with three 2's won the hand. Why exactly is that? Is some distinction made between "native", or pocket cards, and those that come up on the flop, turn, and river? If you can explain this, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.
Oh yeah! Duhhhh!!! Thanks folks - forgive my brain fart : )

F U B replied: "The player that had pocket 2's has a full house because you use a total of 5 cards. The other player only had 3 of a kind."

bukolitos replied: "The other guy with the pocket 2's got a full house. Three 2's and a pair of aces while the guy got three of a kind."

wholisticalt replied: "I was going to say the same thing that the last 2 did. I decided to collect my points anyway"

MLNICROK replied: "Pair on the board give the pocket 2's a full house."

Leroy W replied: "this was too easy"

Home poker rules...to have each player be responsible for their own best hand or not? So lets say "Player1" is up for dealing and explains a poker game and the rules of gameplay. (e.g. Omaha Hi-Lo, Baseball, 7 card stud, etc) Player1 deals the cards and after betting Player1 doesn't have a winning hand; Player2 and Player3 agree that Player2 beat Player3's hand. Player2 is about to take his chips and at this instant Player1 realizes Player3 has a better hand afterall. what is done here?

a) Does Player1 speak up who really won before Player2 takes the chips?
or
b) Does Player2 take the chips afterall?

cory m replied: "well if the better hand is by poker rules(as trips or 3 of a kind beats a 2 pairs) then the person with trips wins regardless of what they agree on. At least that's how i play."

Mick Shrimpton replied: "With the ring of friends I play with most, we always point out the best hand if mis-called by a player, whether it be a winning hand or a losing hand that the player called out as a winner.

In this case, Player 1 wins as long as he kept the pot straight and didn't muck his hand already."

LegFuJohnson replied: "In any organized game, the cards speak... so best hand wins. But it's a home game, do what you want.

I'd think in that spot I'd speak up, I must have explained the rules incorrectly if two players think the wrong person won."

joemonty2000 replied: "The Dealer is in charge of the table-PERIOD. Especially if that dealer has called the type of game for that hand. No one should be upset, or take offense to being told they don't actually have the best hand, as rules are rules. They may not like it, but that's the way it goes.
Dealers are in charge of directing the action of the players, the pot, and any side pots and if they see the winning hand it is their responsibility to point it out."

Bill F replied: "cards speak

if you are friends, player 1 should definitely speak up. in a casino, it gets a little stickier, but speaking up is still okay. but in a home again, absolutely give the money to the person who has the best hand.

hope that helps"

anyone know poker rules? in poker does a straight of 8 9 10 jack queen king beat a straight of 8 9 10 jack queen, and a pair of 3's?
help. thanks so much

Dethril replied: "i mean yes"

Qwyrx replied: "In poker, you always compare exactly 5 card hands. If the game has more than 5 cards (like 7 card stud and Texas Hold Em), each player chooses their 5 best cards as their hand. Always--you can't have a 6 card straight, and you can't have a straight plus a pair.

In this case, one player has a straight 9 through King, and the other has a straight 8 through Queen. When comparing straights, you compare the value of the higher card. Here, the king is higher, so that hand wins. If the two cards are equal (like if both players have an 8-Q straight) the hand is a tie and the two players split the pot."

Dib B replied: "simple, play then win or loose"

TheDoverPro replied: "In poker at showdown, you make the best hand with the best 5 cards, and 5 cards only, and these cards speak for themselves. NO other cards are used.

In this case one player has straight 8,9,10,J,Q and the other player has a straight, 9, 10, J, Q, K. The straight to the King is the higher straight and wins the hand and the pot.

Good Luck!"

George replied: "The pair of three's is not part of the equation. You can only play the 5 best cards you have. A straight beats two of a kind, so you'd play the straight. So, if you're playing Texas Hold 'Em and a straight hits the board, while you hold a pair of threes, the threes don't play. They're cancelled out by the straight that you have on the board. You can play the board, or any 5 card combination that you can make using one or both cards in your hand, plus cards on the board, but you can only play five cards. Here's an article that might be helpful to beginners interested in tournament play: "

What is the name ofthe poker games played in the 007 movie Casino Royale? I've been watching Casino Royale alot recently and I'm curious as to what game it is that Bond beats Demetrios, and Le Chiffre in the poker game. I play poker every now and then but i have never seen this game. What game is it and what are the rules?

LegFuJohnson replied: "Texas Hold em?

It's the most popular poker game out there now. It's on a bunch of TV Channels all the time."

kingcrab2879 replied: "its called Texas Holdem, aka Holdem cuz its that popular now.

you get 2 cards and the board gets 5 community cards. it got really popular after the 2003 WSOP main event in Las Vegas was won by an amateur online player named Chris Moneymaker.

before 2003, Holdem was not that popular. home games were like 7-stud and 5-card draw before holdem became so popular. now EVERYONE watches Holdem on TV and think they know how to play poker."

Bryan P replied: "It is called No Limit Texas Hold'em. It is the most popular poker game in the world right now. If you want know the rules I suggest you check out full tilt. The have quick and simple lessons, a poker academy, a glossary of terms not to mention you can play for free on their site.-"

Adam S replied: "It's No Limit Texas HoldEm, and by the way Bond plays it VERY BADLY in the movie."

What beats what??? (poker)? When it comes down to 2pair against 2pair, What would win.
(Texas hold em')

The highest card of the 2pair or the highest cards?

Ex.

Ace - 2

vs.

King - Queen.

What would win, king queen is obviously better but ace is highest.

And what are the "rules" in this kind of situation?

Thanks yall!

melons replied: "When you have two pair against two pair, the high card wins.

For example, using yours.

Ace-2 against King-Queen

The Ace-2 would win because the Aces are higher."

seantheman_1313 replied: "If you have a pair of aces and a pair of 2's, then it beats the kings and queens. But if there are 2 pairs on the board, then the high card plays, which would still be the ace."

Messy replied: "A 2 would win this as it would be called aces over 2's. it's the same with a full house if your highest card is the highest on the table in this case the ace then the second pair is irrelevant unless someone else has the same high pair again in this case the aces..
I hope this helps"

Asad B replied: "The Highest card in the two pair
wins"

mark h replied: "you already asked this question? A-2 beats K-Q....always has...always will"

poker basics? Can someone explain the basic rules for playing poker. like which beats which. i see my friends playing and i have no idea what theyre doing.

pokercoach replied: "You can log on my site for rules, tips and advice.

Take care"

thomas s replied: "Rules to follow for new poker players:
Texas Hold'em-
You will be given two cards to start. If you don't have a pair of 8's or better.......FOLD.
After a round of betting, they will put down three cards.
You are now playing with the two cards in your hand and the three on the table.
After a round of betting, they will put down one card.
You are now trying to make your hand with your five best cards.
This can be the two in your hand and three of the four on the table or One of the cards in your hand and all four on the table.
After another round of betting, they will put down one card.
Again you are trying to make your best hand using a total of five cards from your hand and what is on the table.
There is one last round of betting. Anyone who has not folded away their cards has to show them and call what five card hand you are plank with.
Bring a cheat sheet with what hands rank until you think you have it. You can buy a new deck of cards and there should be a cheat sheet inside waiting for you.
Play some on Yahoo Games if you don't feel comfortable. It is all play money.

Good Luck!"

machomarioman replied: "A pair (two of the same card) beats high (the highest card someone has, like two 5s beats an ace high) 3 of a kind (three of the same card) beats a pair. (like 3 7s beats 2 5s) Next is a straight (like 2,3,4, 5, and 6) This beats 3 of a kind (10,j,q,k,a beats 3 7s. Next is a flush (all of the same like all hearts) that beats straight. (If every card in your hand is one suit, like hearts, diamonds, clubs, or spades, you beat the 10.j,q,k,a) next is full house (a pair and 3 of a kind in one hand) This beats the flush (three 3s and two 4s beats a flush) Next is 4 of a kind (four of the same card, like 4 10s. This beats full house (4 As beats a full house) Next is 5 of a kind (5 if the same card, like 5 6s) You can only get 5 of a kind playing with jokers (you can choose what card a joker can be)( 5 2s beats 4 As) Next is a royal flush (it beats everything) It consits if the highest cards (10,j,q,k,A) and a flush (Ex: 10,j,q,k,A of hearts) If you have this in your hand, expect to win. This game is called 5 card draw, since players start out with 5 cards. You then discard any cards you don't need. You can only discard 3, unless you have an A (ace). you can discard every card in your hand if you have an A. Now, which card beats which: 3 beats 2, 4 beats 3, 5 beats 4, 6 beats 5, 7 beats 6, 8 beats 7, 9 beats 8, 10 beats 9, J beats 10, Q beats J, K beats Q, and A beats K. (A is considered 1 but it's the most valuable card) Hope this Helps!"

Father Ashley replied: "Try this:

Aaron P replied: "man.... that's sick... she's your cousin...."

Yami Yugi replied: "ew, thats nasty. shes your cousin man"

rpmgonewild replied: "Well, if your cousin is also your mother, sister, grandma, and godmother, then your family is too flucked up anyways so go for it. That's some serious incest right there, man. You could have severely retarded, no offense, children if that goes the wrong way. SAY NO TO INCEST!!!!!!"

tax on poker bad beat jackpot- 300 to 1 rule or not? for tax winnings on a bad beat jackpots, can you count the total amount bet during the hand as the bet for the 300 to 1 rule

JuJu Bean llc replied: "you can offset all your winnings at the end of the year with all your losses if you keep a rough tally going so you should in the end keep it all unless you are winning that often then you have nothing to worry about"

CottonPatch replied: "You can only show that you broke even or won. Can't claim a loss."

mrplayer1603 replied: "depending on the casino when a jackpot is hit depending on the amount won they may make you fill out a tax form which in turn they send to the IRS. HOWEVER everytime you go to the casino if you cash a check or withdraw money from the ATM save your reciept because come tax time you can show those as gambling losses and probably not have to pay anything."
